There is great talent in Australia and the German audiences loves artists from Down Under. We always have a special eye on that market – which won’t stop in the future either! Also, on a personal note, I somehow always end up at the bar with an Aussie at the end of a good night…” Bjørn Pfarr – Head of Music Programme, Reeperbahn Festival.

17 Australian artists travelled to Hamburg, Germany in September 2019 to showcase at the renowned Reeperbahn Festival.

Their presence will be bolstered by the festival’s decision to make Australia the focus country for 2019. Sounds Australia will also be returning to the conference to host THE AUSSIE BBQ and networking opportunities for industry delegates, as well as coordinate additional activities for artists and industry in Berlin prior to Reeperbahn Festival.

After a few years away, Sounds Australia will make their highly-anticipated return to Berlin on Monday September 16 to present THE AUSSIE BBQ at Fluxbau, offering a number of the Australian artists selected for Reeperbahn Festival an opportunity to showcase in front of the Berlin music industry. The free event, which is slated to become a regular fixture on the Berlin calendar, will also give music fans a chance to discover both emerging and established Australian talent.

The Reeperbahn Festival will officially launch with a red carpet event on Wednesday September 18 at Stage Operettenhaus. Hosted by Charlotte Roche and Ray Cokes, Doors Open will be a night full of entertainment, including sets by Feist and Angus Stone’s Dope Lemon, who recently celebrated the release of their second album, Smooth Big Cat.

Then on Friday September 20, Molotow in Hamburg will once again play host to THE AUSSIE BBQ at Reeperbahn Festival. Expanding to three stages this year, THE AUSSIE BBQ is set to be one of the most exciting showcases at this year’s Reeperbahn Festival, featuring 16 acts and six hours of live Australian music.

The ANCHOR – Reeperbahn Festival’s annual international music award – also has an Australian presence. Zan Rowe, host of Double J Mornings and the National Music Correspondent for the ABC, is part of this year’s ANCHOR Jury, alongside illustrious company including Arnim Teutoburg-Weiß, Bob Rock, Kate Nash, Peaches and Tony Visconti. Maria Amato, the General Manager of AIR, will again join a prestigious international group of music industry representatives on the ANCHOR Board. The board and jury will play complementary roles to crown the most promising emerging talent performing at this year’s Reeperbahn Festival.

It’s an exciting time for Australian music globally. In July, the Australia Council for the Arts released its Born Global report, which showed that Australian music export is worth $195 million annually. The finding coincides with Reeperbahn Festival selecting Australia as its focus country for 2019, as well as Sounds Australia celebrating ten years of export.

With Germany as the fourth largest music market in the world (IFPI Global Music Report 2019), the opportunity for Australian artists and industry to make in-roads in the territory has never been stronger.

Australian artists who have played Reeperbahn Festival include Ainslie Wills, Alex The Astronaut, Amyl And The Sniffers, Angie McMahon, Ball Park Music, Client Liaison, Jagwar Ma, Jarryd James, Jen Cloher, Kim Churchill, Lisa Mitchell, Megan Washington, Methyl Ethel, Ocean Alley, The Paper Kites, Parcels, RUFUS DU SOL, Seekae and Seth Sentry.
