Performance Opportunities

One of the main aims of SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is to provide additional showcase opportunities for Australian artists whilst participating at international market events.
Every act is awarded an “official play” by the event and where possible we look to maximise the amount of times Australian artists are able to be seen on top of this.  There are also numerous other day parties and evening showcases that artists are encouraged to pitch for that are presented by labels, agents, brands, blogs and other festivals.

Please be aware that an invitation to perform at a SOUNDS AUSTRALIA produced event is not a given, nor guaranteed.  At almost every international event now where we undertake support activity there are more acts showcasing than there are available performance slots.  As resources and funding permits we are constantly looking for ways to increase these performance opportunities, however whilst the demand is higher there will be always be acts that we physically can’t program.

There is no formal process that needs to happen to make yourself available for any of these showcases. You do not need to apply at all and  by virtue of your “official” selection, you are automatically in contention. The selection of the artists to perform at any of these showcases rests entirely with the SOUNDS AUSTRALIA Export Music Producer.  For some events too, the Bookers of the respective Festivals will also be actively involved with these decisions. The curation of every event is approached with both a creative and commercial remit and the ultimate goal is to encourage key international delegates to attend, watch and network with the Australian showcasing artists.  Where possible a geographical and genre spread will be considered, along with the investment stakeholders needs, however none of these variables will impact on the final line up decision.

Please note that the invitations to artists to perform on SOUNDS AUSTRALIA produced events will only be issued once all official artists have been selected by the Event and more importantly have confirmed their attendance.

We are mindful that “Non-official” artists also attend international conferences, in particular SXSW.  When made aware of their presence we will certainly include and promote them in all our marketing and promotional collateral, however with respect to showcasing opportunities Official artists will always be prioritised.

More than anything we really want to communicate the message that regardless of whether your act is showcasing or not, the SOUNDS AUSTRALIA produced shows are created for everybody to attend and to take advantage of the delegates being in attendance.  Just because your act isn’t up on stage doesn’t mean you can’t benefit – when not performing you can really use the event to network and meet key international industry.

THE AUSSIE BBQ – in partnership with the super awesome folk/founders Stage Mothers, THE AUSSIE BBQ is the largest showcase of Australian artists performing together outside of Australia. Not always, but in most instances THE AUSSIE BBQ showcases are full band performances rather than solo artists.  Backline is shared, changeovers are extremely tight and sausages are served.

THE AUSSIE BBQ currently takes place at SXSW, CMW, The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Music Matters, Americana and CMJ.

SOUND GALLERY – A showcase of Australian acoustic works;  stripped back performances, generally more appropriate for solo artists, singer/songwriters, ballad makers, and that type of stuff (by mcqueen at dheadcom). Sound Gallery currently takes place at SXSW and CMW

SUITE MATE – The sweetest showcase of Australian talent….held in an executive hotel suite. A niche, boutique style of showcase, during the day to showcase premier artists in a more intimate setting, with no alcohol. Held at events where the conference takes place for the most part in the one hotel. Suite Mate takes place at CMW and Liverpool Sound City.

2 FOR THE SHOW CASE –is the perfect way to let the entire US College Radio fraternity, who are in attendance at CMJ know who you are!  College Day is predominately made up of Music Directors, Radio Programmers, producers and student Volunteers, that are all working at College Radio Stations around the USA. “2 FOR THE SHOWCASE” is literally each artist playing 2 songs only during College Day.  For this particular tastemaker audience we know that it only takes 2 songs for them to make up their mind and seek out more about an act if they like what they hear.

CMJ WRAP PARTY – Co-hosted with Cyber PR and held on the Sunday afternoon after the Marathon finishes, the Wrap Party is an acoustic showcase performance / farewell the Aussies / closing party held at their offices in Brooklyn – specifically geared for the online and blogging communities.

In addition to THE AUSSIE BBQ showcase held at key international music conference/festival events , there are also side shows presented in order to increase the touring opportunities for Australian artists whilst on the other side of the world.  For inclusion on these events you will need to liaise directly with our Export Music Producer Glenn Dickie:
