INDIE WEEK 2013 – CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Sounds Australia, AIR and the PPCA are now seeking expressions of interest from Australian independent labels to take part in an Australian delegation to the American Association of Independent Music’s (A2IM’s) Indie Week 2013 in New York City this June.

Indie Week 2013 is an member-only conference for record labels and service providers with a strong focus on the exploitation of master recordings, licensing, networking and digital revenue streams. AIR has attended previous Indie Week events and strongly believes that Australian labels will benefit from having a presence at this emerging conference focused on the specific needs of independent music labels.

As such, A2IM have extended 10 invitations to Australian labels. Due to this limited capacity we ask all interested parties to show an expression of interest by filling out this survey – it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to complete.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST CLOSE ON MONDAY 25TH OF MARCH

Sounds Australia, AIR and the PPCA will host a networking reception during the event and members of the Australian delegation will feature in a panel concerning the Australian market.Indie Week 2012 featured:

600+ independent label executives, predominantly from North America.

Delegations of labels from China and the UK as well as delegates from France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, New Zealand and Japan.

The 2012 American Independent Music Awards – “The Libera Awards”.

Extensive executive one-on-one networking featuring labels, digital services and music supervisors from TV, film and advertising.

Panels on Pan-European licensing, YouTube monetisation.

Keynote speeches from Pandora’s Tim Westegren and Robert Levine, author of “Free Ride”.

The development of an independent music “road-map” for best practice.
Board meetings for WIN (Worldwide Independent Network) and MERLIN.

Please note:

Indie Week 2013 will be held in New York City on the 18th to 20th of June.

Sounds Australia’s sponsorship of Indie Week 2013 will cover conference registration for a small group of delegates as well as participation in panel discussions and one-on-one networking.

Australian attendees are responsible for booking and funding all flights, transfers and accommodation themselves.

A2IM’s Indie Week 2013 is an “invitation only” event and not open to the general public.

Due to limited capacity and the small number of invitations, all attending Australian labels must have a catalogue of at least five albums and represent the music of at least three artists. It is expected that they are digitally pro-active and are doing business internationally.

Welcome to 2013.

SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is pleased to announce as we launch head first in to what promises to be our busiest year yet, we have some incredible new staff joining us for the ride.

Dr Ianto Ware has been appointed as National Live Music Coordinator with SOUNDS AUSTRALIA to support the local venue-based live music industry and develop Australia’s music export potential. We are thrilled to have Ianto on board; click here for more details on the new appointment.

Alicia Kish will be taking on the role of Associate Producer in Esti Zilber’s absence while she takes maternity leave. With extensive experience in the music industry working for both independent and major labels and as an independent artist manager, as well as extensive creative arts experience abroad, we have no doubt Alicia will be a valuable addition to SOUNDS AUSTRALIA and look forward to having her be part of the team.

So where have we been these days? Back in Cannes, France for MIDEM, and once again SOUNDS AUSTRALIA saw Australia Day in with a networking reception at our stand. It felt wonderful hosting an event that saw so many nationalities in attendance and we are looking forward to hearing about the outcomes our delegates took from their MIDEM experience.

At the time of writing, we find ourselves in Glasgow for Showcase Scotland, looking forward to launching our exciting new partnership commencing in 2014. There are some brilliant plans coming together for Celtic Connections next year. The city is truly buzzing at the moment, and the Australian delegation is lapping it all up in anticipation for an even greater presence next year.

Following on from Celtic Connections, our next bout of Australian activity abroad will have seven artists head to Toronto for the International Folk Alliance. We will be joining our previous partners over at the ECMAs to produce the AUSCAN Music Spotlight; a showcase of Australian and Canadian artists wowing the industry through individual and collaborative performances.

It’s already February, which means SXSW is just around the corner, which translates to SOUNDS AUSTRALIA working with 45+ home grown acts in Austin Texas, for what has to be one of the largest events on any musical calendar. We have so much in the pipeline for this year; networking, showcasing and some very exciting brand new marketing material. If you liked the baseball cards, the deck of talent, and the pegs, we’ve got something super special up our sleeves to roll out next month. Watch this space…

The Aussie BBQ will return to Maggie Maes for another all day extravaganza of songs and snags. Taking place on Saturday 16th March, the lineup is yet to be announced, but we promise it will be B.I.G.

And then we pack up shop and head to Toronto for Canadian Music Week. 18 Australian artists will take to stages throughout Toronto from the 19th March, and SOUNDS AUSTRALIA will be on the ground in churches and iconic venues showing off as many Australian artists as we possibly can.

Needless to say, it’s a very thrilling time for us right now – keep very close to our social media to stay updated on where we are, what we’re up to, and how to access the latest news regarding the success of our artists abroad.

Arts Minister Simon Crean today announced the appointment of live music advocate and policy consultant Dr Ianto Ware as National Live Music Coordinator for SOUNDS AUSTRALIA.

“The 2012 Federal Budget provided additional funding to the SOUNDS AUSTRALIA music export program which will help contemporary Australian musicians and songwriters develop from local to global stages,” the Minister said.

Through previous roles in the not-for-profit sector, Dr Ware has extensive experience supporting artists, venues, industry associations such as CEO of Renew Adelaide and founding director of Format Adelaide, as well as state and local governments.

“Live music has been a hugely positive influence in my life. I’m absolutely thrilled to take on a job that will allow me to give back to the Australian local music scene,” Dr Ware said.

APRA|AMCOS Chief Executive, Brett Cottle, said the appointment is a welcome boost for the Australian music industry.

“The local live music industry is where our songwriters and performers hone their craft,” said Mr Cottle.

“It’s no secret that the international appeal of artists like Gotye started at home – performing to local audiences in small venues.

The National Live Music Coordinator role is significant – it will help ensure our live music scene continues to thrive and contribute significantly to our potential export success,” he said.

In 2011, an Ernst and Young study commissioned by APRA|AMCOS and funded by the Australia Council and other industry partners found that venue-based live music contributed $1.2 billion to the economy, serviced almost 42 million patrons and created nearly 15,000 full time jobs Australia-wide.

Australia Council Acting CEO Libby Christie said, “Research such as our More than bums on seatsand Artfacts: Music have shown us repeatedly that music plays a vital role in Australian culture, with almost every Australian making it a part of their life.”

“The National Live Music Coordinator position will further capitalise on the significant economic and cultural gains that can be made from investing in the live music economy for artists and venues alike,” said Ms Christie. “We’re delighted to see this industry partnership expand.”

SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is Australia’s music market development initiative, established to provide a cohesive and strategic platform to assist the Australian music industry access domestic and international business opportunities.

Prog rock giants Karnivool will headline the Aussie onslaught, which will also feature indie outfit Big Scary, DJ duo The Aston Shuffle from the next wave of Australia’s emerging electronic elite, Jinja Safari with their afro-pop rhythms and tumbling island guitar grooves, and Sheppard one of Australia’s newest indie pop bands known for their catchy lyrics.

Karnivool vocalist Ian Kelly said “we share a philosophy that music allows us to see different parts of the world, and what better place to put that into practice than in India. With this in mind we’ll take on, and take in, all that India’s cities, people, music and culture has to offer.”

SOUNDS AUSTRALIA and STAGE MOTHERS are partnering with powerhouse Indian music promoter Only Much Louder to present THE AUSSIE BBQ.

THE AUSSIE BBQ has become a global name in music, made famous over the years by showcasing Aussie bands at music festivals such as SXSW (Austin, Texas), Canadian Music Week (Toronto), Music Matters (Singapore), The Great Escape (UK) and CMJ Music Marathon (New York).

The Aussie bands will kick-start their tour at India’s ‘happiest music festival’ the Bacardi NH7 Weekender in Pune, featuring some of the most exciting artists from India and around the world.

The Sound Chamber, an interactive sound art live experience, will also feature at Bacardi NH7 Weekender with the bands. An inflatable dome measuring six metres in diameter, Sound Chamber allows the user to become the artist in the ultimate audio-visual mash up, where both sound and light react to human movement.

THE AUSSIE BBQ will also be a vehicle for those looking to do business with the Australian music industry. Aussie industry heavyweights are fronting up for the Australian focus at India’s leading music and digital platform Nokia Music Connects.

It was a jam packed month for SOUNDS AUSTRALIA, with three international markets to fit in as many weeks. The networking started before we had even stepped foot out of London. CIMA (Canadian Independent Music Association) organised a gathering of top UK Synch players to impart wisdom to a room full of international music industry. Ireland, Scotland, Catalan, Canada, and of course Australia were all healthily represented in what was a very insightful panel followed by some casual networking drinks that rounded off an excellent introduction to our infiltration in to the UK music scene.

On to Brighton for The Great Escape, and our third annual SOUNDS AUSTRALIA Welcome Luncheon. Sixty-five delegates from all over the world joined representatives from the Australian Royal High Commission to sit down to an Indian feast, followed on by our first showcase of TGE12 at The Festival Hub. Despite the dreary weather, the crowds came out in droves to listen to Emma Louise, Ben Salter, Husky, Oliver Tank, and Step-Panther. A little rain never stood between the Brits and the prospect of discovering untapped international talent.

In amongst all the panels and showcase hopping, our Export Music Producer Millie Millgate managed to take out yet another award at this year’s YMCAs (Yearly Music Conference Awards). She was inducted in to the Hall of Fame alongside Neil Dixon from Canadian Music Week. With absolutely zero time to bask in any kind of glory, it was straight back to business with our Aussie BBQ about to get in to full swing down the road at Digital. Inland Sea, Jackson Firebird, Red Ink, Chet Faker and Jinja Safari performed their hearts out on what had to be one of the most glorious days one could wish upon a British seaside haven. Beers were consumed, snags were eaten, tunes were played, crowds were pleased and we were able to put a neat little cap on another wonderful UK conference/showcasing event.

We jumped on the train back to London and went directly to Stage Mothers Aussie BBQ at Cargo. We reunited with our newly made buddies from Brighton, made some new friends keen to work with Australian music, and watched the day unfold beautifully. Over the course of the day, punters were privy to Ben Salter, Bonfire Nights, Husky, Inland Sea, Jackson Firebird, Jinja Safari, Kellie Lloyd, Mike Noga, Oliver Tank, Sietta, Step Panther, The Bowers and The Killgirls

Which brings us to Liverpool for Sound City. The Queen popped by for a visit, in amongst panels, roundtables and showcases. Australians took to venues all through the city center every night, and The Aussie BBQ was the perfect end to our UK sojourn. It was a full day (with no rain whatsoever), featuring Inland Sea, Bonfire Nights, Ironside, Sietta, Jackson Firebird, Ben Salter, Emma Louise, Oliver Tank and Step-Panther.

All our photos from the UK are now up on our facebook page.

And to warmer climates, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA returned to Singapore for our Aussie BBQ at the Beer Market. Music Matters were the consummate hosts to Australian artists Direct Influence, Kate Miller-Heidke, Natasha Duarte, Pandorum, This Sanctuary and Warning Birds. It was our last international ‘hurrah’, before heading home for APRA’s Song Summit.

After a month of conference hopping, it must be said, we were thrilled to be attending such a high quality, community focused event on our own turf! Our Canadian friends from the ECMAs (East Coast Music Association) joined in for some of the action at the AUSCAN Music Spotlight showcase, and blew everyone away. We have never been more certain that the relationships we are building with our international counterparts continue to help as grow, both in terms of artist development, and the vital sense of community we strive build around us at home and abroad.

Staying domestic for the next little while, this week we’ll be at the WAMi’s sitting on panels and mixing it up with as many international delegates and local industry as possible – it’s a program busting at the seams this year, and SOUNDS AUSTRALIA will be getting right in amongst it. Full details on the WAMi awards in next month’s BYTES

Artist submissions to play CMJ in New York will close on the 26th June. Head to our website for info on past activity in that market – it’s always an amazing ride. For up to date information on artist submission deadlines and showcase activity, follow us on twitter.

Sounds Australia heads offshore for the month

We can feel winter starting to creep up on us, so it’s only fitting we head North, where spring is blooming, and the UK are offering us Australians some seriously warm hospitality in the shape of The Great Escape and Liverpool Sound City.

This May, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is jetting off to Brighton, Liverpool and Singapore, with a pit stop in London for good measure. The Great Escape, on the shores of Brighton, will see seventeen Australian acts take to stages throughout the cobble paved streets from the 12th – 14th May. Ben Salter , Chet Faker, DZ Deathrays, Emma Louise, Husky, Inland Sea, Jackson Firebird, Jinja Safari, Last Dinosaurs, ME, Oliver Tank , POND, Red Ink, Step-Panther, The Killgirls,The Temper Trap and Young Magic are in line to showcase for some of Europe’s top taste makers, as well as keeping in some very impressive company, with a stellar international line up that indicates Australian music really has firmly placed itself on the world map. Full line up details can be found at escapegreat.com/

Breaking up the UK events will be The Aussie BBQ (London). Returning to Cargo after a wildly successful event last year, the amazing folk at Stage Mothers have pulled together an all Australian line up that will offer Londoners a true taste of our local music scene.

The stomping ground for The Beatles and the home of several Banksy’s, Liverpool, will be hosting fifteen Australian acts from 17th – 19th May for Liverpool Sound City. Playing venues all over the city this year will be; Ben Salter, Bonfire Nights, Emma Louise, Inland Sea, Ironside, Jackson Firebird, Jjinja Safari, Last Dinosaurs, Oliver Tank, POND, Sietta, Step-Panther, The Temper Trap, The Bowers and The Jezabels. All our UK activity will come to a close at our Aussie BBQ at Heebie Jeebies on Saturday, 19th May. It will be a full day of live music and fresh snags, kicking off from 11:00am and offering delegates a mini festival of all Australian goodness, before seeing them off to all corners of the globe.

Rounding off the epic month of May will be Music Matters in Singapore. We loved the perfect combination of beer and BBQ so much, we could not refuse the opportunity to take over the Beer Market once again, and putting our Australian showcasing acts front and centre for the night. From 8pm on Thursday, 24th May, Direct Influence, Kate Miller-Heidke, Natasha Duarte, Pandorum and This Sanctuary will take to the stage and see that Singapore gets a taste of our home grown goodness. All this before we dash home in time for SONG SUMMIT!

Be sure to stay up-to-date with all our activity, via facebook and twitter. We’ll be live tweeting from our showcase events and sharing all the positive outcomes and press coverage of Australian artists as they come to light.

If all this talk of going to faraway lands and performing is right up your alley, there are still opportunities to apply for Americana (Nashville), Reeperbahn (Hamburg) and CMJ (NYC). More details can be found at www.soundsaustralia.com.au

SOUNDS AUSTRALIA was without a doubt one of the hot spots at the SXSW 2012 tradeshow. Set up as a little Australian backyard, complete with cricket set and BBQ, we saw all sorts coming through for some insight in to the Australians in Austin this year. Representing 45 acts and endowed with loaded USBs full of home grown tunes, we were very happy to be a talking point amongst industry, for the little musical peg everyone wanted to take home.

Another talking point of the tradeshow was our Block Party. Shut down prematurely for being too loud, DZ Deathrays showed the folk of SXSW they know how to ruffle feathers, with organisers pulling the plug because they were too loud. Not before Big Scary , Luluc and Henry Wagons won the crowds over with varied sets, it was a talking point of the first days of the music sector of SXSW, and DZ handled the whole thing with a winning, laid back attitude that paid dividends in the PR that followed. The whole thing was captured by our friends at Sideshow Alley, whose footage can be found here….

Country Connections was a networking initiative produced by several of the international exporting bodies and hooked our local industry up with their international counterparts. The meetings focused on Labels, Live and Managers, and provided great insight in to how the industry operates in various regions and how we might be able to infiltrate….

Speed Sets took place inside the convention centre and was all about short, sharp, fast sets, with each artist performing two to three songs; allowing Bonfire Nights, Chet Faker, Michael Beach, Teeth & Tongue, The John Steel Singers and Voltaire Twins a small but important window of opportunity to gain extra exposure inside the packed music schedule.

We held a little meet and greet with the fine folk from CMJ Music Marathon. With such a successful 2011, it was only fitting to set up a dalliance with CMJ event organisers and Australian industry. There were doughnuts on offer and some very friendly introductions with a view to continuing our strong representation at the New York event this coming October.

We took over a sweet Irish pub for SOUNDS AUSTRALIA’s acoustic showcase ‘Sound Gallery’. Featuring Busby Marou, Emma Louise, Henry Wagons, Joe Robinson, Lanie Lane, Luluc, Satellite Sky and WIM it was an afternoon of garnering new fans and giving audiences a taste of what the Australians had to offer over the week to come.

Wholefoods hosted a stage again this year, and welcomed Big Scary, Busby Marou, Emma Louise, Joe Robinson, Marco Storm and Satellite Sky into the fold. With the sun shining and the crowds warming to the Australian tunes, it was on for young and old in the forecourt of what has to be the healthiest hangout in Austin.

As a precursor to our Aussie BBQ, we held an intimate panel for managers and showcase event producers; Showcasing the Showcases. Moderated by Adam Lewis (The Planetary Group), the showcases sharing their insights in to how to get involved/on their stages included CMJ Music Marathon , New York | Iceland Airwaves, Reykjavík | Sound City , Liverpool | Music Matters, Singapore | Reeperbahn, Hamburg | Folk Alliance International, Memphis / Toronto | The Great Escape, Brighton

And on to the BBQ, our epic Austin Aussie BBQ! With over 3,000 punters through the door just for the day show, it really has become a must-attend event on the SXSW calendar. With Stage Mothers at the helm with us, it proved to be a long and fruitful day and the best possible way to send off what has to be one of the most hectic, fantastic, jam packed, awe inspiring week of music imaginable.

On to Toronto for Canadian Music Week – we had another great group of Australian acts involved; Big Scary | Busby Marou | Direct Influence | DZ Deathrays | Eli Wolfe | Harry James Angus | Hilltop Hoods | Husky | Jordie Lane | Minute 36 | Oh Mercy | Our Mountain | POND | Saskia Sansom | Teeth and Tongue | The Cat Empire | The Jefferson | The Temper Trap | Tinpan Orange | Traveller and Fortune | Voltaire Twins

In light of our heavy delegate load, we thought it only fitting to hold an Australian Reception at the International Market Place. There was cake. It was to celebrate CMW’s 30th Birthday, and because we like cake. It was the perfect way to ease in to the week and make ourselves known to the Canadian and International industry in attendance.

We held B2B meetings with Canadian industry, held another gorgeous Suite Mate with Busby Marou, Oh Mercy and Harry James Angus. This was in addition to our larger showcase events; Sound Gallery and The Aussie BBQ. Sound Gallery returned to the Library Bar this year and saw a constant flow of great sets, good drinks and lots of professional company. With the radio awards happening just a few floors above, revelers came to the bar post ceremony to chack out the latest Australian offerings, and were not disappointed. The bar was full and the outcomes are already starting to make themselves known….watch this space.

And finally, our Aussie BBQ at El Macombo. A great way to see out the festival, and regroup with all our newly acquired contacts, the Aussie BBQ was held over two stages, hosting Big Scary | Busby Marou | Direct Influence | DZ Deathrays |Eli Wolfe | Husky | Jordie Lane | Minute 36 | Oh Mercy | Teeth and Tongue | The Jefferson | Tinpan Orange | Traveller and Fortune |Voltaire Twins

A big thanks to all our media supporters over this past month, who trailed through the States and Canada documenting all the Australian greatness; The AU Review, Billabout, Kane Hibberd, Triple J Unearthed

After spending the weekend setting up shop, and all of yesterday schmoozing with our friends from Interactive, we welcome Music in to the mix at SXSW 2012.

It’s been an incredible experience so far. Austin really must have reached capacity now, with the streets and tradeshow brimming with folk from every corner of the globe.

Our lil’ Aussie Backyard has proved to be a great hit here, with delegates engaging in some traditional backyard cricket and genuinely amazed the ye old Hills Hoist is actually something we came up with “all the way down there”.

As for the Australians here – they make our job easy, with so much love for our local bands, we are getting copious requests for our SOUNDS AUSTRALIA promotional materials, including a USB loaded with all our local talent.

We held our own event at the trade show block party, which could not have been more fitting given the sweet yard we’ve set up as our home for the week. With help from our friends at Sideshow Alley, Luluc, Big Scary, Henry Wagons and DZ Deathrays played our stage, taking delegates from every corner of the globe, and every possible field in music and interactive on a journey like no other. Truly showing the big picture of how diverse our Australian acts are, the crowd were moved from soft, sweet tunes, through to true blue Americana, and finally culminating with the (literally) show stopping DZ Deathrays – details of their prematurely shut down set here.

Fresh photos up on facebook here, and stay close to Sideshow Alley for their live footage and interviews.

More updates throughout the week as we visit the Wholefoods Stage and BD Reileys for SOUND GALLERY…not to mention our massive Aussie BBQ at Maggie Mae’s at the end of this week. All details available in our online booklet.
