On Saturday June 22, Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage will present THE AUSSIE BBQ in Central Park in partnership with Sounds Australia, the Australian Consul-General, New York and the Australia Council for the Arts.
For ten years, Sounds Australia has provided an integral platform for introducing the international music industry to the best new Australian music. This June, THE AUSSIE BBQ SummerStage extends the invitation to all New Yorkers to experience six incredible Australian artists, whilst celebrating Sounds Australia’s decade of fast-tracking Australian music success globally.
This will be the first time Sounds Australia has presented a showcase in New York since the CMJ Music Marathon wrapped in 2015. The line-up for THE AUSSIE BBQ SummerStage features a thrilling mix of artists who have previously showcased under the Sounds Australia banner, including Hermitude, San Cisco, The Teskey Brothers, Tkay Maidza and WAAX, alongside the U.S. debut for one of Australia’s most exciting hip-hop acts, A.B. ORIGINAL.

A.B. ORIGINAL won multiple ARIA Awards, the Australian Music Prize and the 2018 APRA Music Songwriter Of The Year award for their debut RECLAIM AUSTRALIA, an album hailed as “raw, confronting and empowering”. Not only is THE AUSSIE BBQ SummerStage their first showcase with Sounds Australia, it’s also their first ever show in the United States.
Hermitude have brought their bass-laden beats to many Sounds Australia showcases in the past: CMJ in 2013, The Great Escape and Liverpool Sound City in 2014 and SXSW in 2015. See the Blue Mountains duo, known for ‘The Buzz’ and ‘HyperParadise’, in their first international shows ahead of their sixth studio album.
San Cisco have won a legion of fans thanks to three albums filled with infectious pop melodies. The quartet has showcased with Sounds Australia at CMJ in 2012 and SXSW in 2013 and 2015 and, off the back of their own U.S. tour, they’ll be bringing some Fremantle sunshine to a New York City summer.
Victorians The Teskey Brothers showcased at The Great Escape 2018 and stopped traffic when they performed in the Front Yard of Australia House as part of Sounds Australia’s Sound Gallery showcase at SXSW 2018. Their authentic blend of Motown and Stax influences is capturing the hearts of old-school music fans everywhere.
She’s collaborated with Troye Sivan and Run the Jewels’ Killer Mike, but Adelaide’s Tkay Maidza has carved out her own dancefloor-shaking sound which brings together hip-hop, R&B and pop. She’s brought the vibes to Sounds Australia showcases at CMJ in 2014, The Great Escape in 2015 and SXSW in 2015 and 2017. Now she’s bringing the party to Central Park.
The final spot on THE AUSSIE BBQ SummerStage was open to an Australian act showcasing at this year’s SXSW. Sounds Australia is excited to have the fiery punk rock styles of Brisbane’s WAAX on the line-up, selected by an esteemed panel of 16 music industry judges from the United States.
“The Consulate is so pleased to be bringing such talented Australian musicians to the heart of New York. The sharing of cultures and art between our two great countries is what makes us such close friends. Earlier this year the Consulate brought the triple j Hottest 100 countdown to New York and supported The Rubens on their North American Tour – THE AUSSIE BBQ SummerStage is going to be a fantastic afternoon with long reaching connections and impact.” Australian Consul-General to New York, Alastair Walton
Prior to the showcase kick off at 2pm, Sounds Australia, Australian Consulate General, NY and the Australia Council for the Arts will host a targeted networking luncheon thoughtfully catered by the iconic Bourke St Bakery. The Luncheon aims to provide a unique opportunity for the Australian artists, managers and labels in town for A2IM Indie Week to meet and network with key US and international music industry tastemakers and media.
