“Zan, an electro RnB project by singer and producer Zain Awan, is silky, gritty, gentle and radical all at once. Identifying as queer, Pakistani and Muslim, their music encompasses these different identifiers to create a sound that is truly their own; characterised by Awan’s own agile voice, nuanced beat-making chops, political expression and their own sparkly essence.” – Hannah McKittrick, Trouble Juice
ZAN is a queer desi singer, songwriter & electronic producer whose musical routes are an eclectic mix of South Asian cinema, 90s R&B and electronica.
Born in Abbottabad, Pakistan – a city infamous for the capturing of Osama Bin Laden – ZAN’s artistry originates from an intersectional socio-political identity; a queer muslim voice from the South Asian diaspora – Queeristan.
Both an ode and resistance to the Australian migrant parable, ZAN’s voice is desperately needed in the current music landscape and is a symbol of what it means to exist across social, cultural and political borders.
