“For listeners who have been waiting with bated breath for new RVG, ‘Alexandra’ will be a worthy payoff; the song, produced by PJ Harvey and Nick Cave collaborator Victor Van Vugt, maintains the band’s raw energy while adding newfound depth and sheen. RVG are as tight and compelling as ever, Vager’s evocative howl underscored by instrumentation that’s powerful without overpowering. There are few voices in indie rock as magnetic as Vager’s, and Van Vugt’s production smartly brings her voice to the fore. “ – The Fader
RVG have quickly become one of Melbourne’s most beloved rock bands. After selling all 200 copies of the initial pressing of their debut album A Quality of Mercy on the night of their album launch at The Tote, the band have been playing consistently packed out shows all over their hometown. A Quality of Mercy has been extremely successful on community radio in Melbourne and was awarded 3RRR Album of the Week and a Feature Album on PBS. It has been met with rave reviews from Noisey, Beat, and The Music. The Guardian wrote: “This album sounds nothing like a debut; it was a born a classic.”
RVG consists of four members: Romy Vager, Reuben Bloxham, Angus Bell, and Marc Nolte. In their short time as a band they have played support slots for acts including Gold Class, Scott and Charlene’s Wedding, Real Estate, Terry, Cable Ties, Future Islands, and Kurt Vile and are currently on tour throughout the USA and Canada supporting Rolling Blackouts CF.
RVG showcased at Bigsound 2017 and secured a coveted slot at Meredith Music Festival in December 2017, showcased at the prestigious SXSW in March 2018, and performed at Brighton’s Great Escape festival in May 2018. In 2017 RVG were nominated in four categories in The Age Music Victoria Awards best album, best band, best song, and best emerging act. They also received nominations in four categories of the Australian Independent Record Label Association’s AIR awards. The band signed with Our Golden Friend/Universal Music Australia in 2017 for label and management, and rereleased ‘A Quality of Mercy’ in October 2017. At the end of 2017, RVG signed with Caroline (USA) and Fat Possum (UK/Europe). They have also secured Paradigm Agency for bookings in the USA, and ATC Live for UK & Europe.
In late 2018, RVG recorded new material with Victor Van Vugt, who has previously worked with bands inspirational to RVG such as PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Go Betweens and Beth Orton. The first taste of new music since A Quality of Mercy, brand new single ‘Alexandra’, was released on May 15. The song premiered with Matt Wilkinson on Beats 1, and The Fader wrote: “For listeners who have been waiting with bated breath for new RVG, ‘Alexandra’ will be a worthy payoff; the song… maintains the band’s raw energy while adding newfound depth and sheen. RVG are as tight and compelling as ever… There are few voices in indie rock as magnetic as Vager’s.”
