“Her voice just sends me… David Lynch made that third season of Twin Peaks a year too soon, ’cause she should’ve been playing in that bar.” – NPR All Songs Considered
Gena Rose Bruce’s debut album Can’t Make You Love Me is an intoxicating ride through love, lust, surrender and revival. Bruce’s vocals drive this album; a stirring force amidst the pulsing rhythms, echoes of Mazzy Star and Lynchian undertones. A vibrant youthfulness and deep maturity underpins her writing, allowing songs to swing effortlessly between earnest introspection and cool detachment with utter sincerity. With its infectious melodies and biting lyricism, Can’t Make You Love Me is as playful as it is confessional.
Released in June 2019 via Melbourne indie label Dot Dash Recordings, the album received critical acclaim locally and abroad including NPR All Songs Considered Best New Music, Album Of The Week at The Sydney Morning Herald, Brisbane Times, Byte FM and Radio 100,7 Luxembourg, radio play on KEXP, KCRW, NPR, Communion Presents on Radio X (Making Waves Feature Artist), triple j, Reform Radio UK and more.
In the last 4 months Gena has toured nationally both headlining and supporting international acts including Orville Peck, Basia Bulat and Jay Som. Gena was nominated for Best Breakthrough Act in the Music Victoria Awards and Can’t Make You Love Me was long listed in the Australian Music Prize. The album will receive a physical re-release in the US via Revolver (March 13) and in the UK/EU via Proper Music (March 27).
