“A bold, awesome accomplishment, New Magic is excited, open-hearted and eager. Venom, vocally crushing and sparse. Hooper’s alternate reality is here…” – Strine Whine
Ella Hooper burst onto the Australian music scene at age thirteen as the technicolour teen front-woman of her high school band, Killing Heidi. With an explosively successful debut album she traversed the highs and lows of pop rock, wrote some forever-hits, toured the world, became an unlikely teen icon and generally lived out her wildest dreams.
Act two of Ella’s illustrious career saw her grounding down, post pop fizz, in the genres that soundtracked her childhood growing up in the Australian bush; Alt Country, Americana, folk. Working with Mitchell Froom and some of LA’s finest string and skinsmen, she recorded a collection of mature west coast inspired cuts under the moniker The Verses. Picking up a support slot with Fleetwood Mac, she time spent talking with Stevie Nicks, a fated conversation which became the creative catalyst for the still young stalwart’s full transition into ‘independent solo diva mode’.
Now three releases into her solo sojourn, her music boasts a rotating roster of classic rock feels, wiry balladry and warm, quirky story telling. With a stage persona that’s been called ‘Sexy, Silly, Weird’ – all compliments in Ella’s mind – Hooper delivers authentically bent adult pop. Underwritten by years of experience, her songs and her singular voice, crowned by a trademark husky yelp, pang with humour, heart and intimacy, Ella is widely known for her way with a crowd. In small rooms or on expansive festival stages her easy, infectious energy seems to fill whatever vessel it’s given. Stories, overshares and running off at the mouth keep her fans as plugged to the banter as to the songs themselves, she is clearly an artist who is most comfortable (too comfortable..?) onstage. Which is a good thing as rumour has it she plans to eventually claim her crown as a ‘lifer’ and is busily constructing new music, charting and plotting her third act; one full of promise and intrigue.
