This July, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA will host a series of export masterclasses around Australia with a particular focus on digital exporting.

At the start of 2018 Dom Alessio joined the SOUNDS AUSTRALIA team in the role of Digital Export Producer to develop and deliver a cohesive digital export strategy with a view to bolstering the performance of Australian artists across all streaming platforms, and provide our showcasing artists with a competitive advantage in the important world of global playlisting, in both established and emerging music markets.

We encourage you to come and hear what SOUNDS AUSTRALIA are looking to achieve across digital platforms, and insights into best practise in Digital Export for artists and their teams now and in the future.

In addition, artists and managers will be able to book time for a one on one meeting with SOUNDS AUSTRALIA to discuss specific international plans. This is only available to those people attending an Export Masterclass.

Please ensure you RSVP to the event you wish to attend.

Following the inroads of their inaugural Trade Mission to South America in 2016, and a successful follow up in 2017, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA will return to South America for a third trade mission with the support of the Australian Government through the Council on Australia Latin America Relations (COALAR) of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

A delegation of music industry professionals and artists will return to the region this November/ December to build on established networks and opportunities that have been forged over the last two missions.

Latin America’s positive growth story is no secret. In 2017 it was the region that saw the largest revenue growth in the world according to the IFPI’s latest Global Music Report. Total recorded music revenues were up by 17.7%, with especially strong showings from Brazil (up 17.9%), Peru (up 21.7%) and Chile (up 14.3%), driven largely by a 48.9% increase in streaming revenue. After exploring the region over the last 5 years and witnessing a rapid expansion in the development of the market, this year’s mission will also extend for the first time to incorporate participation in El Mercado and En Órbita in Lima, Peru.

The trade mission delegates for 2018 represent a strategic mix of industry, working across genres and sectors, including Andrew Stone (Chugg Music), Coco Eke (Bad Apples Music), Joel Byrne (Music SA / Sundial Productions), Joshua Olson (Hillsong Music), Katie Besgrove (Look Out Kid / Barely Dressed Records), Maggie Collins (BIGSOUND / Morning Belle), Rowan Robinson (Macro Music) and Sabrina Robertson (Native Tongue Music Publishing / Maths & Magic).

With additional support from the respective Australian Embassy posts, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA will again present THE AUSSIE BBQ at leading music conferences in the region. Featuring three fiercely talented Australian acts – Alexander Biggs, Deep Sea Arcade and Birdz – showcasing at FLUVIAL (Valdivia, Chile) and BAFIM (Buenos Aires, Argentina), with the addition of Jess Cornelius and Chela at SIM (São Paulo, Brazil).

Millie Millgate, Executive Producer, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA: “The key to building effective pathways and access for Australian artists in international markets is continued investment and a commitment to returning to new territories. One-off visits, whilst enjoyable, are not strategic and we are grateful that DFAT through COALAR have shared our vision and supported consecutive trade missions in order to harness the increasing opportunities being heralded for Australian artists and music companies across Latin America.”

SOUNDS AUSTRALIA will partner with Australasian music rights organisation APRA AMCOS and its Brazilian counterpart UBC to deliver the first-ever SongHubs collaborative songwriting residency in the region. The APRA AMCOS initiative brings together its members with top international guest talent to create new commercial works and foster professional opportunities.

Over the course of an intensive three-day session at producer Dudu Borges’ studio, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA Export Music Producer, Glenn Dickie will serve as the SongHubs Brazil curator, assigning creative teams to work together on writing and recording a new song each day. Showcasing artists Alexander Biggs, Chelsea Wheatley (Chela), Jess Cornelius, Nathan Bird (Birdz) and Deep Sea Arcade’s Nic McKensie and Nick Weaver will participate alongside fellow Australians Lila Gold and Mitch Kenny, as well as Brazilian guests including multiple Latin Grammy-nominee Celso Fonseca, writer and A Little Nation vocalist Samille Joker, versatile songwriter Bibi, multi-talented singer and composer Gloria Groove and production duo Los Brasileros.

Primavera Pro is a global meeting for the music industry of today. During the year it opens a window on the news and challenges of an industry that is in constant evolution, and during the week of Primavera Sound, this commitment culminates in the celebration of the now traditional yearly international meeting in Barcelona. For 5 days the present and future of the music business are debated with the best-known experts in the field, dozens of newcomer bands and all the tools necessary for the professionals from all around the world who attend the meeting.

Thanks to its position as a strategic point of cultural exchange between Europe, North America and the Latin American countries and in 2017 had over 3,300 accredited professionals (half of whom were international), with almost 130 activities and 75 showcases, Primavera Pro has become the ideal setting for the analysis of the state of the industry calmly and with perspective, to understand what is going on and what is in store for the future.

Primavera Pro 2018, the ninth edition, will take place from 30th May to 3rd June.

Australian artists who have played Primavera Pro include Gang Of Youths, Gold Class, Gordi, Holy Holy, The Meanies, Methyl Ethel, Nick Murphy, Oh Pep!, Safia and Twerps.

Aengus Finnan, Executive Director of Folk Alliance, states, “There is enormous opportunity to strengthen the relationship between our organisation and Australia, and we will be actively working to build industry, festival, and artistic bridges in order to provide a more formal and robust presence at future conferences.”

Australian artists who have played Folk Alliance International include All Our Exes Live In Texas, Busby Marou, Emily Wurramara, Henry Wagons, Jordie Lane, Katie Noonan, Liz Stringer, Luluc, Mia Dyson, Oh Pep!, Ruby Boots, William Crighton and Yirrmal.
